As expected, Yelan ends up being highly similar to Xingqiu. However, there are a few key differences to note. So for those who own Yelan, make sure to not neglect these common mistakes while using her.
8 Neglecting Energy Recharge
As an off-field DPS, the majority of Yelan’s damage comes from her Elemental Burst. So, while maximizing her damage potential may be tempting, the first priority with Yelan should be to ensure that she has 100% Burst uptime.

For this, players have several options. They can include a Genshin Impact Battery like Raiden Shogun or Xingqiu, but the most flexible method is to equip Yelan with enough Energy Recharge. Players would want a 180% Energy Recharge as the absolute minimum.
7 Building Yelan On ATK
All of Yelan’s abilities in Genshin Impact scale with HP, be it her Elemental Skill, Elemental Burst, or Breakthrough State. Consequently, ATK Artifacts, sub-stats, and weapons are practically useless on Yelan. This even causes powerful 5-Star Weapons like Amos’ Bow to perform terribly on Yelan.
Not only that but because Yelan doesn’t benefit from ATK, players also shouldn’t attempt to buff her with some Genshin Impact supports like Bennett and Kujou Sara or with Artifacts like 4-Noblesse Oblige or 4-Tenacity of the Millelith.
6 Using Yelan As The Main DPS
Yelan’s off-field kits scale with HP and Hydro DMG, but to play her as the Main DPS, players have to use ATK and Physical items. Doing this will significantly lower Yelan’s Elemental Skill and Burst damage.
Yelan staying on-field is not the most optimal way to play her. If Travelers wish to maximize Yelan’s potential, it’s best to keep her as a Sub-DPS. This stays true even after players unlock Yelan’s final Genshin Impact Constellation. Her C6 effect allows her to have more field time but still not as the Main DPS.
5 Underestimating Her Synergy With Some Characters
It’s common knowledge that Yelan is the 5-Star version of Xingqiu. However, many believe that she doesn’t hold the same potential as the 4-Star character. The biggest fear among the community is that Yelan doesn’t work well with Hu Tao. Fortunately, even though Yelan has a weaker Hydro application than Xingqiu, Hu Tao can still work with her.
Other than Hu Tao, the most notable teammate for Yelan is likely Raiden Shogun. The Genshin Impact Electro Archon will allow Yelan to fully focus on her offensive stat, bringing her DPS to a far higher level than Xingqiu could ever reach.
4 Forgetting Her Fourth Ascension Passive
Yelan has an extremely powerful fourth ascension Passive. It’s basically a free damage buff, earning it the name “Mini Mona Buff”. While Yelan’s Elemental Burst is active, the on-field characters will deal 3.5% more damage every second. At the end of the ultimate’s duration, this bonus can reach 50%.
However, one thing to note about this ability is that it only buffs the active character. So players shouldn’t waste time on other units that are not their Main DPS.
3 Focusing Too Much On Having Four Elements
On her first ascension, Yelan gains the ability to increase her own HP based on the number of Elements that exist in the party. When there are 1/2/3/4 Elements in the team, Yelan gains 6%/12%/18%/30% HP.

Obviously, this Passive will come in handy for Yelan’s overall DPS. Nevertheless, players shouldn’t mind this too much and instead focus on the party’s overall well-being. For example, don’t be scared of losing 12% of Yelan’s HP to trigger a 15% damage bonus from Geo Resonance.
2 Not Choosing F2P Weapons
As Yelan’s best-in-slot weapon in Genshin Impact, it’s completely normal for Aqua Simulacra to hold a massive DPS threshold. But behind it, players shouldn’t worry about needing premium Bows like Skyward Harp or Polar Star. Due to Yelan’s Energy Recharge requirement, F2P weapons like Favonius Warbow can perform about as good as the alternative 5-Star options.
New players can also enjoy Yelan to the fullest by using the 3-Star Genshin Impact weapon, Recurve Bow. The equipment offers HP% sub stat, perfect for Yelan.
1 Trying Hard To Fire Her Breakthrough State
While using Yelan, players may notice that her bracelet would light up sometimes. When this happens, it’s an indicator that Yelan’s Breakthrough State is ready. In this state, Yelan can quickly shoot a Charged Attack, dealing AoE Hydro DMG based on her max HP.
This ability can come in handy sometimes, but it’s completely fine to ignore it. For those who aren’t adept at quickly shooting a Charged Attack, it is better to ignore Yelan’s Breakthrough State and save a few precious seconds in time-limited content like the Spiral Abyss.
Genshin Impact is now available on Mobile, PC, PS4, and PS5. A Switch version is in development.
