At the moment, Genshin Impact has five different weapon types in the game: sword, claymore, catalyst, polearm, and bow. Many fans hope that HoYoverse could add another weapon type in the future, especially considering that they’ve already added a new element named Dendro to the playable roster.

Reddit user princessailish has created an impressive piece of art that shows how the four-star Hydro user Barbara would look like if she used a staff instead of a catalyst. Many fans seemed to like the concept as the thread reached over 3k upvotes with many comments stating that they would love to see a staff weapon type arrive to the game, especially considering that the catalyst is the only mage-like weapon in the game. Catalyst is also the only weapon in the game that automatically infuses the characters’ Normal, Charged, and Plunging Attacks with elemental damage.
A couple of fans have pointed out that this concept is very reminiscent of Lux who is a popular mage champion from League of Legends. Even though Barbara is one of the oldest characters in the roster, she is still viable in many team compositions that need a decent healer. She is one of the rare characters in the game that can apply healing with both of her skills. Barbara has great synergy with one of the upcoming characters, the Pyro user Hu Tao who has been confirmed for the second part of Genshin Impact update 3.4.
Hu Tao and Barbara can trigger one of the strongest elemental reactions in the game named Vaporize by combining their Pyro and Hydro elements. Even though catalyst users used to be considered supportive units most of the time, over the last couple of months, developer HoYoverse has introduced a number of DPS characters that use this type of weapon.
The previous Genshin Impact update 3.3 added the Anemo catalyst Wanderer, previously known as Scaramouche, who has a very specific DPS play style that allows him to fly above his foes. Even the new Dendro Archon Nahida can be used as the main damage dealer in certain team compositions. However, in order to unlock her full damage potential, players need to max out all of Nahida’s constellation levels.
Genshin Impact is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, and mobile devices. A Switch version is in development.
