Updated June 20, 2021 by Mina Smith: For a free-to-play game, Genshin Impact is packed to the brim with content. But some of the quests that players will undergo are harder than others. One example is “In the Mountains.” During the quest, players will need to thaw out a bunch of shards, then do it again. The following guide has been updated with more information and pictures to help gamers complete this challenge.
Thawing All the Shards Again in Genshin Impact
The main part of this quest involves players thawing frozen shards. Unlike how thawing ice usually works in Genshin Impact, with players using a fire skill, they will find they need to make use of Scarlet Quartz instead. When smashed, Scarlet Quartz gives players a temporary buff that allows them to break Magical Ice. However, once players have finished thawing the shards, players will need to thaw them all a second time. This second step can be a little confusing for players.

As players head up the road towards the quest marker, the meme-able Paimon will ask how to get up the mountain, and she will suggest that players “try following the road first.” Players will have to make their way up the mountain, mostly by climbing, to get to the quest marker at the first shard that must be thawed again.
How to Thaw the First Shard Again in Genshin Impact
As players find the top of the mountain in Skyfrost’s Nail at the top of the Dragonspine, a cutscene will play, showing the frozen spire. In order to get to the Scarlet Quartz to give player’s the buff that breaks the Magical Ice, they will need to first defeat all the enemies in the area. There is a barrier around the sleeping Ruin Grader and the Scarlet Quartz that will keep players from getting to it until all the enemies are dead.

After breaking this Scarlet Quartz, players should travel further into the circular slope and switch to an archer character like Amber while the Scarlet Quartz buff is still active. Aim at the first shard, which is floating near the spire, and break the ice around it with arrows. If players are quick, they can also climb up to the shard before the Quartz timer is up.
How to Thaw the Second Shard Again in Genshin Impact
After thawing the first shard again, players will need to look for second shard, which will spawn very close to where the first shard was. After locating it, players should keep heading up the slope until they reach a heat beacon. From there, players should head north and defeat the Frostarm Lawachurl they find. Near a chest, players should then be able to find the next Scarlet Quartz they will need to break. Once this Scarlet Quartz is broken, players should go back to the cliff near the heat beacon from before. There, they can shoot down the second shard with their archer character.
How to Thaw the Third Shard Again in Genshin Impact
At this point, players just need to thaw one more shard. This shard is located much higher up than the others; it can be found floating directly above the spire. Players should follow the Warming Seelie that was near the Lawachurl’s chest to an Anemo Totem. The Anemo Totem will need to activated by a character with a wind skill, such as Venti or the Traveler. This will summon a wind current and accelerating rings that the player can glide through in order to make it to a Hilichurl camp.
At the Hilichurl camp there will be a Scarlet Quartz that players need to break. They will then need to glide down to one of the floating platforms in order to shoot or attack the third shard. This will result in all of the shards having been thawed once more.
